Devarshola sits in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, in the hilly Gudalur area close to the borders with Kerala and Karnataka. From above it doesn't look like a compact town. It looks like a loose network of hamlets joined by roads that follow the land rather than a plan, bending around ridges and dipping into small valleys.
