Drobeta-Turnu Severin stretches along the left bank of the Danube in south-western Romania, just downstream of the gorge known as the Iron Gates. The river is the dominant shape on the map, a broad band of water separating the city from Serbia. The town rises from it in gentle terraces.
The modern centre was laid out in the nineteenth century on a regular plan, so the core reads as a neat grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks. Parks and public squares sit inside that pattern, and the most recognisable building is the old water tower.
