Piteşti lies on the Argeș River at the edge of the Carpathian foothills in southern Romania. On a map the city rises from the river on its eastern side toward the higher ground to the west, where the Trivale forest park covers a large area of wooded hills. The centre is compact, with a pedestrian street and squares, while larger residential districts spread along the valley.
The city is the end point of the A1 motorway from Bucharest, whose first section, opened in 1972, was Romania's first motorway. Nearby Mioveni is home to the Dacia car plant, which has shaped the region's economy for decades. The city is also known for its annual spring tulip festival.
