Durham grew in the late nineteenth century around tobacco, and the brick warehouses and factories of that era still frame its downtown. Streets there meet at a variety of angles, following old rail lines rather than a single grid, and the Durham Freeway runs just to the south. The layout gives a Durham map poster a slightly irregular, characterful centre.
West of downtown, Duke University occupies two main campuses. East Campus is a formal rectangle of lawns and Georgian-style buildings, while West Campus, arranged around the Gothic chapel, sits within a large area of forest. From above, these green blocks and their curving drives stand out sharply against the surrounding residential streets.
The city is also home to historic Parrish Street, once known as Black Wall Street for its concentration of African American businesses, and to North Carolina Central University. To the north the Eno River winds through wooded parkland, and to the southeast lies Research Triangle Park, drawing the city's roads out toward Raleigh and Chapel Hill.
