Fayetteville grew up at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River, and the river still defines its eastern side on a map. The downtown sits on higher ground to the west, where the streets meet at one central intersection. Beyond it, suburban neighbourhoods, shopping corridors and pine-covered land spread outward across the sandy terrain of the North Carolina Sandhills.

The town grew from two earlier settlements, Campbellton and Cross Creek, and was later renamed after the Marquis de Lafayette.
