East Providence sits directly across the Seekonk and Providence rivers from the city of Providence, in the northern part of Narragansett Bay. On a map, it is a long, narrow city. Its western edge follows the rivers and the bay shore, while neighbourhoods such as Rumford, Riverside and Watchemoket fill the land behind with a mix of suburban streets, parks and arterial roads.
Bridges link East Providence to Providence across the water, and Interstate 195 cuts across the north of the city. Along the shore, the East Bay Bike Path follows an old rail line south towards Bristol. In Riverside, Crescent Park is home to the Looff Carousel, a hand-carved carousel from the 1890s that is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
An East Providence map poster makes the relationship with the water clear. The shoreline runs down the whole western edge, coves and inlets break it up, and the street grids of each neighbourhood meet at slightly different angles. In black and white, the city reads as a series of communities joined by the bay, with the edge of Providence visible just across the river.
The city's western edge follows the Seekonk and Providence rivers and the bay, so the poster has a long, detailed waterline along one side.
This path follows a former rail line along the shore towards Bristol, visible on the map as a thin, gently curving line near the water.
In Riverside, the park and its historic Looff Carousel sit near the bay, a small but well-loved landmark in the southern part of the city.
