The Arab commander Amr ibn al-As founded Fustat in 641 beside the Roman fortress of Babylon, on the east bank of the Nile. It was Egypt's first capital under Muslim rule. For several centuries it was the country's main city and a dense trading town, until Cairo grew up to the north and eventually absorbed it.
Today the district is part of Old Cairo, and its map is unusual for a former capital. Large areas appear as open ground, where the old town survives mainly as excavated foundations and mounds. The tight streets of Coptic Cairo and the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As lie along its western side, and main roads and the river frame the whole area.
Recent decades have added new shapes. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization now stands here beside the lake of Ain el-Sira, and new parkland projects have been reshaping the ground around it. An El-Fustat map poster records a place caught between archaeology and renewal, where the empty spaces on the drawing say as much as the streets.
Traditionally regarded as the first mosque built in Egypt, it anchors the older street pattern on the district's western side as a large rectangular block among smaller plots.
The lake beside the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization forms a clear water shape, one of the most distinctive features when the district is drawn in black and white.
The compact lanes around the old Babylon fortress and its historic churches form a dense cluster that contrasts with the open ground stretching east across ancient Fustat.

This map is for people drawn to the deepest layers of Cairo: archaeologists, students of Islamic history, or anyone who has walked from the Coptic churches to the old mosque. Its mix of dense lanes and open ground makes an unusual, quiet composition.
