Encontrados is a town in Zulia state in western Venezuela, in the flat, humid lowlands south-west of Lake Maracaibo. It lies on the Catatumbo River near where the Zulia River joins it, and the water defines its shape. The settlement stretches along the bank, with streets running back from the river into the surrounding land.
On the map, the river is the dominant feature, a wide, curving line that the town follows. Around it, the land is low and largely agricultural, with channels and wetland patterns that add fine detail in black and white. The border with Colombia is not far away.
The wider Catatumbo region is known worldwide for its lightning, a near-constant storm activity over the river mouth at Lake Maracaibo. An Encontrados map poster focuses on the town itself: a riverside settlement in the lowlands, shaped entirely by water.
The broad river bends past the town, forming its most important edge and the strongest line on the poster.
Streets run back from the waterfront, so the town takes an elongated form along the bank.
Flat farmland, channels and wetland patterns surround the town, adding a delicate texture around the settlement.
