Ercolano lies on the Bay of Naples, below the western slopes of Mount Vesuvius. From above, the modern town fills the space between the shoreline and the rising ground, with roads climbing toward the volcano. At its centre is an unusual feature: the excavated site of ancient Herculaneum, sitting well below the level of the surrounding streets.
Herculaneum was buried by the eruption of AD 79, the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii. Thick volcanic deposits preserved its buildings, and some organic materials, remarkably well. The coastal road through town was part of the Miglio d'Oro, the 'Golden Mile', lined with eighteenth-century villas built by Neapolitan nobility.
An Ercolano map poster shows these layers side by side. The excavation appears as a clear, open shape surrounded by dense streets, the coastal road follows the shore, and the upper roads wind up toward Vesuvius. It is a map with a lot of history in a small area.
The ancient town appears as an open, clearly bounded area within the modern streets. On the map its orderly Roman grid can be seen below the irregular pattern around it.
The historic coastal road runs through town, once lined with noble villas. On the poster it forms a long, steady line parallel to the shore of the bay.
East of the centre, roads climb and bend toward the volcano, and the built-up area thins out. The rising ground frames the town and reminds the viewer why Herculaneum was buried.

Ko e hā ʻa Ercolano
Ercolano stays with people who have walked through the ancient streets and looked up at Vesuvius. A map poster brings that combination of sea, volcano and history into a calm, readable design.
Add a date, a name or a short line about your visit to the title and subtitle, and keep the coordinates line or change it. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits the volcanic setting especially well.
