Evanston is the first suburb north of Chicago, and from above it reads as a continuation of the city's grid until the grid runs into Lake Michigan. The shoreline forms a long, clean eastern edge, softened by beaches and small parks. Inland, the blocks settle into regular rows of houses and tree-lined streets, broken only by rail lines running north and south.
Northwestern University occupies much of the lakefront. Part of its campus stands on land built out into the lake in the 1960s, so the shoreline bulges outward where the university meets the water, with a lagoon inside. The North Shore Channel, dug in the early twentieth century, cuts a straight line through the western side of the city, a contrast to the curved shoreline.
Evanston was also the long-time home of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and the city stayed dry for decades after Prohibition ended. Near its northern edge, the Grosse Point Lighthouse stands above the lake. An Evanston map poster sets the straight streets against the open water, which makes it one of the more graphic plans along the North Shore.

North Shore Channel
A man-made waterway runs straight through the western neighbourhoods, drawing a sharp diagonal-free line that splits the grid and carries a green strip of parkland along its banks.
