Evaton lies in Gauteng's Vaal Triangle, south of Johannesburg and close to Sebokeng and Vanderbijlpark. From above it reads as a broad, low-rise settlement of small plots and long straight streets, laid out across the flat Highveld and interrupted by open spaces, streams and main roads leading to the surrounding industrial towns.
Evaton has a distinctive place in South African history. Established in the early twentieth century, it was one of the few areas where Black residents could hold freehold title to land, and it developed a strong community life as a result. Later it was part of the Vaal townships at the centre of the 1984 uprising.
The Evaton map poster shows a place where the street grid runs to the horizon, broken by the lines of roads and railways that connect it to the wider Vaal region. It is a quiet map of a historically significant community.
Streets run in long parallel lines across the flat Highveld, dividing the township into regular rows of small residential plots.
Evaton was among the rare early townships with freehold land ownership for Black South Africans, which shaped its layout and community.
Main roads link Evaton with Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark and Johannesburg, crossing the map as strong lines through the residential pattern.
