Ko e mape
Vereeniging lies on the Vaal River at the southern edge of Gauteng, where the river marks the boundary with the Free State. From above, the town is defined by the water: the Vaal loops in broad meanders along its southern side, and the grid of the older centre gives way to riverside suburbs, golf courses and green banks that follow each curve.
Coal and steel built the place. The town grew in the late nineteenth century after coal was found along the river, and heavy industry followed, leaving rail lines, large works sites and wide arterial roads that cut across the map. Together with Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg it forms the Vaal Triangle, one of the country’s oldest manufacturing regions.
The name means association or union in Dutch, and the town is remembered for the peace talks held here in 1902, which led to the Treaty of Vereeniging ending the Second Anglo-Boer War. A Vereeniging map poster shows the river bends, the rail corridors and the grid that grew between them.
The river winds along the southern edge of town in wide loops, forming a natural border with the Free State and a strong curving line across the bottom of the map.
The original centre is laid out in a compact rectangular grid near the river, a clear block of straight streets set against the looser suburbs around it.
Railway lines and large industrial sites run through and beside the town, visible as long straight tracks and broad empty parcels between the residential areas.

Ko e hā ʻa Vereeniging
Vereeniging is a working town rather than a postcard, and that is part of its appeal on a wall. People who grew up in the Vaal area, or whose families worked in its mines and mills, often want a plain, honest map of streets they know.
Set a title and subtitle of your choice and change the coordinates line to a date or a message. Five styles are available, from Classic black & white to Noir. Choose the $9 digital files to print locally, or order a matte poster with an optional wooden frame.
