Fairhaven lies on the east bank of the Acushnet River, directly opposite New Bedford, where the river opens into Buzzards Bay. On a map the harbor dominates. Wharves and piers line both shores, and the Route 6 bridge carries traffic across the water between the two towns. The shoreline is irregular, cut into coves, points and marshy inlets.
The town center follows a neat grid close to the water. It includes a notable group of public buildings, among them the town hall and the Millicent Library, paid for by the industrialist Henry H. Rogers, who was born here. At the harbor mouth, Fort Phoenix sits on a rocky point. It was the site of an early naval engagement of the Revolutionary War.
Joshua Slocum rebuilt the sloop Spray in Fairhaven before sailing it alone around the world. To the south, Sconticut Neck stretches far into Buzzards Bay. A Fairhaven map poster shows the town through its relationship with the water: harbor, bridge, peninsula and bay, with the streets arranged along the river's edge.

This small fort on a rocky point at the harbor entrance looks out over Buzzards Bay. It marks where the river meets open water.
This long, narrow peninsula runs south into the bay with a single main road along its length. It gives the map a distinctive finger of land.
