Farnworth is a town in the borough of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, lying between Bolton and the Irwell valley. On a map it is dense and finely textured: long rows of terraced streets from the cotton era, packed tightly together, broken up by main roads, a railway line and later housing estates toward the edges.
The town grew quickly in the nineteenth century around mills and collieries. Farnworth Park, opened in 1864 by William Gladstone, forms a generous green space among the terraces. To the north, Moses Gate Country Park follows the valley of the River Croal, and the M61 motorway runs past to the south and west, marking the town's outer edge.
