Floresta is a municipality in the sertão of Pernambuco, the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil. Despite its name, which means forest, the landscape around it is caatinga, a dry scrubland of thorny shrubs and cacti adapted to long dry seasons. The town sits beside the Pajeú, a river that flows strongly in the rainy months and can dwindle in the dry season.
On a map the town is a compact grid next to the riverbed, with the river's course running in a winding line near the edge of the streets.
