Fort Walton Beach lies on the Florida Panhandle in Okaloosa County, on the northern shore of Santa Rosa Sound. Water organises the map. The sound runs east–west in front of the city, Okaloosa Island forms a long, narrow barrier strip beyond it with the Gulf of Mexico on the far side, and Choctawhatchee Bay opens to the east toward Destin.
The city is closely tied to Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field. Their large, mostly wooded reservations border it and appear on maps as broad areas with few streets. In the city itself, Heritage Park preserves a Native American temple mound, one of the notable archaeological sites on the Gulf Coast, right beside the main road.
A Fort Walton Beach map poster works because of its layers. Residential streets fill the mainland, the sound runs in front, the thin island lies beyond it and the open Gulf fills the edge. It makes a coastal print that is both detailed and airy, and it looks particularly good in the Blueprint and Sand styles.
The sound runs along the city's southern edge and separates the mainland from Okaloosa Island. It is a long, calm band of water across the map.
This narrow barrier island is reached by bridge from the city. Its single road and strip of beach lie between the sound and the Gulf.
Heritage Park holds a Native American ceremonial mound in the city centre. The small site stands out against the surrounding grid of streets.
