Freeport is the main city on Grand Bahama, the northernmost large island of the Bahamas. Unlike most Caribbean towns, it was planned from the start. The Hawksbill Creek Agreement of 1955 set up a free trade zone administered by the Grand Bahama Port Authority, and the city was laid out on largely empty land. From above, the result is a map of long, wide roads and generous spacing.
To the south, the Lucaya area developed as a resort district along the coast, and extensive canals were dug to create waterfront lots. On a map these canals appear as a fine network of parallel and branching channels. To the west, the harbour and industrial zone form a separate, distinct area of large sheds and straight quay lines.
A Freeport map poster shows a city that was drawn before it was built. The broad avenues, the canal system and the coastline together create a composition that looks deliberate and open. It suits Blueprint particularly well, where the planned layout reads almost like the original drawings.
Canals cut into the south coast create a network of narrow waterways and residential lots. It is one of the most intricate patterns on the map.
Wide, straight roads connect the city's districts. They reflect the mid-century planning that shaped Freeport and give the map its open structure.
The deep-water harbour and industrial zone lie to the west, and the long southern shoreline frames the city with a clean edge of open sea.
