Fudong lies in the mountainous southwest of Yunnan province, in a region of deep valleys and forested ridges. On the map, the settlement sits where the land briefly levels out. Streets and buildings cluster along a valley floor, and roads leave in tight curves as they climb the surrounding slopes.
In this part of Yunnan, there is little flat land, and the terrain shapes every line. Rivers and streams follow the valley bottoms, and the roads tend to follow them, then switch back up hillsides toward villages on higher ground.
