Gemlik sits at the eastern end of the Gulf of Gemlik, an inlet of the Sea of Marmara, north of Bursa. The coastline curves around the town, and the map follows it: a waterfront road along the shore, a compact centre behind it and residential districts climbing into the hills. Port facilities and industrial sites extend along the coast.
The town stands on or near the site of ancient Kios, a Greek colony, and its long history as a harbour continues today through a busy commercial port. Gemlik is also known throughout Turkey for its olives. The Gemlik variety, a small black table olive, is grown on the slopes all around the gulf.
