Genoa is shaped by a lack of flat land. The city stretches for kilometres along the Ligurian coast, pinned between the sea and the steep slopes of the Apennines, with neighbourhoods pushing inland up the Polcevera and Bisagno valleys. Harbour and Lanterna
Long piers and breakwaters reach into the sea along the western waterfront, where the Lanterna lighthouse marks the entrance to one of the Mediterranean's major ports.
