Georgiyevsk lies in Stavropol Krai, on the Podkumok River, at the northern edge of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. From above, the town is fairly compact. It has a regular grid of streets on flat ground, and the river valley curves along one side, with its trees and floodplain creating a gentle, irregular edge.
Rail lines and main roads pass through the town and link it with the spa towns further south, such as Pyatigorsk and Mineralnye Vody. To the north and east, the landscape opens into farmland and steppe. On clear days the peaks of the Caucasus can be seen from the region, although on the map the land around the town stays fairly flat.
The town began as a fortress in 1777, part of Russia's defensive line in the North Caucasus. It gave its name to the Treaty of Georgievsk of 1783, signed here between Russia and the Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti. A Georgiyevsk map poster records a town whose name marks an important moment in the region's history.
The river curves along the town's edge. Its green valley and floodplain are a soft, natural contrast to the regular street grid.
The central streets follow a straight, orderly plan that goes back to the town's early days as a military outpost.
Railway lines and main roads cross the town and lead south to the spa towns. They form strong, clear lines across the map.
