Gloucester was an independent township, and later a city, on the southeastern side of Ottawa until 2001, when it was amalgamated into the present City of Ottawa. On a map it covers a wide area between the Ottawa River to the north and the Rideau River to the west, stretching from inner suburbs out into open farmland.
Its landscape reflects Canadian suburban planning: winding crescents and cul-de-sacs grouped into neighbourhoods, framed by arterial roads and the Queensway. The National Capital Commission's Greenbelt cuts through the former township, preserving a band of forest, fields and wetland, and the Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport lies within its old boundaries.
