Gradignan lies on the southwestern edge of Bordeaux, just inside the ring road that circles the metropolis. On the map it is a finely grained suburb. Tree-lined residential streets and detached houses spread out on all sides. Small parks and wooded strips follow the valley of the Eau Bourde, a stream that winds through the commune and gives the street pattern a soft green seam.
The town has long been a stop on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The old Cayac priory, a former hospice for pilgrims, still stands on the route south. Nearby, the university campus shared with Pessac and Talence adds large blocks of buildings and open lawns to the northern side. That contrast between campus scale and suburban scale is clear from above.

Cayac priory
This historic hospice on the Way of St James sits along the road leading south out of Bordeaux. It is a reminder of the town's long role as a stop for pilgrims.
