Oasis edge
Where the irrigation ends, the built and farmed area stops and open desert begins. This clear edge makes the outline of the settlement especially graphic in black and white.

Gujangbagh lies within the Hotan oasis in southern Xinjiang, at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains and on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert. From above, the settlement is defined by water. Rivers from the mountains feed a network of irrigation channels, and streets, orchards and roads spread across the green land they create until the sand begins.
The Hotan oasis has been a stop on the southern branch of the Silk Road for many centuries. It is known across China for its jade, which the rivers carry down from the Kunlun, and for its long traditions of carpet weaving and silk production. Most residents are Uyghur, and the oasis has long been one of the main population centres of the region.
A Gujangbagh map poster turns this landscape into a study in contrast. Dense streets and field boundaries sit against the wide emptiness of the desert around them. The straight lines of canals and roads give the composition a quiet rhythm. It is a portrait of a place that exists because water reaches it.
Where the irrigation ends, the built and farmed area stops and open desert begins. This clear edge makes the outline of the settlement especially graphic in black and white.
Canals and field roads run through the oasis in long straight lines. They repeat across the map and tie the streets and farmland into a single pattern.
Longer roads run out of the town through the farmland toward neighbouring villages. They draw the oasis as a connected network instead of a single compact centre.

The map is a fitting keepsake for people from the Hotan area and their families elsewhere in China or abroad. It also suits travellers who followed the old Silk Road routes along the southern edge of the Taklamakan.
