Hamhŭng lies on a coastal plain in the east of North Korea, a short distance inland from the East Sea. From above, the Songchon River is the defining line, running through the city toward the coast, with bridges tying the two banks together. Wide, straight avenues form the central grid, and to the southeast the urban area continues toward Hŭngnam, the industrial port district that has been merged into the city.
Much of the present layout comes from the reconstruction after the Korean War, when the city was rebuilt with help from East German planners and engineers in the 1950s and early 1960s. The region also has deep dynastic associations: it was the home ground of Yi Seong-gye, founder of the Joseon dynasty, and sites connected with his family remain in the area.
A Hamhŭng map poster renders the city as its planners imagined it: long axes, broad blocks and a river that organises everything around it. In monochrome the regularity of the rebuilt centre stands out clearly against the looser pattern near the hills and the coast. It is an unusual subject for a wall, and a precise one.
The river runs through the city toward the East Sea, splitting the plan into two banks joined by bridges, and gives the poster its strongest natural line.
The centre was rebuilt after 1953 with wide, straight avenues and large blocks, a geometry that reads clearly in black and white and anchors the middle of the composition.
Toward the coast the map extends into Hŭngnam, the port and chemical-industry district, where the fine street grid gives way to larger industrial parcels and rail lines.

Ko e hā ʻa Hamhŭng
Hamhŭng appeals to people drawn to cities few outsiders have seen, to students of postwar planning, and to families with roots in the northeast of the Korean peninsula. The map offers a calm, factual view of a place usually known only through headlines.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a family name or a year, and pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files include six print sizes, or you can order a printed poster on matte paper.
