Manp’o is in Chagang Province, in the mountainous north of North Korea, on the southern bank of the Yalu River. The river forms the border with China, and the Chinese city of Ji'an lies on the opposite bank. On a map the Yalu is the dominant feature, a wide curve with the city arranged along its bank.
The surrounding terrain is steep and forested, leaving little flat land. As a result the city stretches in a long, narrow band along the valley floor and up side valleys where tributaries join the Yalu. Streets run mostly parallel to the river, with a railway line along the same corridor.
A Manp’o map poster shows a city shaped almost entirely by geography: river on one side, mountains on the other, and a thin strip of streets in between. A cross-border railway bridge connects it to Ji'an, one of the few crossings along this stretch of the frontier.
The border river curves along the whole city front, wide and clear on the map, with China on the far bank.
Mountains confine the city to a narrow strip of flat land, so streets and rail line run parallel along the valley.
A railway bridge crosses the Yalu to Ji'an, linking the two countries at this point of the frontier.

Ko e hā ʻa Manp’o
Manp’o is a place few people can visit, which makes its map all the more interesting. The shape alone, a city squeezed between river and mountains, makes a strong, graphic poster.
