Handa sits on the eastern shore of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi, facing Kinuura Bay south of Nagoya. On a map, the coastline and port areas form the eastern edge, with reclaimed industrial land cut into straight quays. Inland, residential streets spread across low ground, and a small canal runs through the old centre towards the bay.
The city has long been a centre of brewing and fermentation. The vinegar maker Mizkan has its home here, and old black-walled warehouses line the canal. Handa is also the birthplace of Nankichi Niimi, the children's author known for the story Gongitsune, and the area associated with him draws visitors to the spider lilies along a nearby river.
A Handa map poster shows a harbour town with a clear rhythm. The angular port and industrial zones face the bay, the older quarter with its canal sits just inland, and the railway lines run north towards Nagoya. In black and white, the contrast between the geometric waterfront and the finer residential grid is strong and satisfying.
A short canal leads from the old centre to the bay, lined with the dark warehouses of the city's historic brewing and vinegar trade.
The eastern shoreline is shaped by straight quays and reclaimed land, forming a crisp, geometric edge along the water.
Two railway lines run up the peninsula towards Nagoya, and their parallel tracks cut clear lines through the residential streets.
