Haren (Ems) sits where the River Ems and the Dortmund-Ems Canal run close together through the flat country of Emsland. The map shows both. The river bends in wide loops, and the canal cuts a hard straight line beside it, with the town between and around them. The streets are low-rise and spread out, and the harbour basins and quays point to the town's long connection with inland shipping.
Haren is known as a town of shipowners and skippers, and many vessels on German and European waterways have been registered here. After the Second World War it had an unusual episode: from 1945 to 1948 the town was placed under Polish administration and renamed Maczków, before it was returned to its residents.
A Haren map poster brings together these two water lines, one natural and one engineered. The canal gives the composition a clean axis. The river adds curves and oxbows, and the town fills the ground between with a loose, suburban weave of streets.
The meandering River Ems and the straight Dortmund-Ems Canal run side by side, giving the map a rare pairing of natural and man-made waterways.
Quays and basins along the water reflect Haren's role as a home port for inland shipping companies and generations of boat families.
Around the town, the level landscape of fields and moorland edges spreads out in long straight tracks and field boundaries.
