Hengelo lies in Twente, in the east of the Netherlands, directly beside Enschede and not far from the German border. The land is flat, and the map is structured by infrastructure: the Twentekanaal reaches the town's harbours on its way to Enschede, railway lines meet at a busy junction, and motorways skirt the built-up area.
Hengelo grew with the textile and metal industries, and firms such as Stork and Hazemeyer shaped it; today it is home to Thales Nederland, the defence electronics company. Much of the centre was damaged by bombing in the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, which is why the core looks more modern and open than many Dutch town centres.
Around the centre, residential neighbourhoods follow the Dutch pattern of curving streets, green strips and water features, with industrial areas along the canal and railway. Lines from several directions meet at Hengelo station, and the tracks fan out across town, cutting the neighbourhoods into clearly distinct sectors.
