Hörstel is a town in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia. It brings together several villages scattered across the flat Münsterland countryside and the northwestern end of the Teutoburg Forest ridge. On a map it looks less like a single town and more like a group of small centres linked by country roads.
Its best-known feature is the Nasses Dreieck, the canal junction where the Mittelland Canal branches away from the Dortmund-Ems Canal. From above, the two waterways meet in a crisp triangle of straight lines, one of the more striking pieces of engineered geometry in the northern German canal network.
A Hörstel map poster combines those sharp canal lines with the looser pattern of farm roads, fields and wooded slopes. It is a composition with very little clutter, carried by long lines of water across open land.
The junction of the Mittelland and Dortmund-Ems canals forms a clean triangle on the map, the best-known landmark in the area.
The wooded ridge of the Teutoburg Forest runs out near the town and appears as a narrow forested band above the lowland.
Several separate settlements make up the municipality, each with its own small cluster of streets set among fields.
