Hunchun lies in the far east of Jilin province, in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. From above, it is a regular grid of wide streets set in a broad river valley. The Hunchun River runs past the town, and the Tumen River flows along the North Korean border to the south.
Downstream, a narrow strip of Chinese land follows the Tumen toward the coast. It ends at Fangchuan, where China, Russia and North Korea meet, only about fifteen kilometres from the Sea of Japan. Chinese territory does not reach the sea itself.
A Hunchun map poster shows a city defined by borders and rivers. Street signs here are often bilingual in Chinese and Korean, and signs in Russian are also common, which reflects the city's position at the meeting point of three countries.
The border river winds through the valley south of the city. Its bends and sandbanks form a clear, flowing line on the map.
The city centre is laid out in a regular grid of broad streets. It is compact and well ordered within the valley.
A thin strip of land follows the river to the three-country junction. It stops just short of the Sea of Japan.
