Hwange is in Matabeleland North, in the west of Zimbabwe. It is primarily a coal mining town. The colliery has operated there since the early twentieth century, and the town was known as Wankie until 1982. On the map, mine workings, rail sidings and residential areas lie scattered across low, rolling ground.
The railway between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls passes through the town. It links Hwange to the wider country and forms one of its main lines on the map. The town also gives its name to Hwange National Park to the south, Zimbabwe's largest national park, known for its elephant herds.
A Hwange map poster shows a town arranged in separate clusters rather than one continuous centre. Townships and mine areas are connected by winding roads, with open bush between them. The result is a loose, spread-out composition that reflects how the town grew around the mine.
Colliery areas and rail sidings form distinct industrial shapes. They show the coal mining that created the town.
The Bulawayo–Victoria Falls railway crosses the area in a long line. It connects the separate parts of the town.
Residential areas sit in separate clusters on the hills. The open bush between them gives the map lots of space.
