Ijevan is the capital of Tavush province, in the green north-east of Armenia. The town follows the Aghstev river through a narrow valley. From above, it is a long, slender settlement where the streets run parallel to the river and the wooded mountains close in on both sides.
The name means 'inn' or 'resting place', a sign of its old role as a stop on the road toward Georgia and Azerbaijan. Today the town is known for its wine and brandy production and for an open-air park of stone sculptures created during international symposia.
An Ijevan map poster shows how the terrain shapes a town. The river runs through the middle of the composition, the streets stretch out along it, and the forested slopes leave broad, calm margins on either side.
The river runs through the length of the town, and bridges and riverside streets follow its course down the valley floor.
Hemmed in by mountains, Ijevan grew along the valley rather than outward, which gives the map an elongated shape.
Stone works from international sculpture symposia stand in an open-air park in the town, a well-known local landmark.
