Independência is a town and municipality in the interior of Ceará, in northeastern Brazil, in the western part of the state near the Crateús region. The landscape is sertão. It is semi-arid country with caatinga vegetation, seasonal rivers, and small reservoirs called açudes that store water for the dry months.
On the map, the town is a compact grid around a central area with a church and square, a common pattern in the Northeast. Main roads lead out to neighbouring municipalities and rural districts.
