River meanders
The Ishim River loops through and around the town. Its curved channels, oxbow lakes and floodplain give the map its most distinctive shapes.

Ishim is in the south of Tyumen Oblast, in the flat forest-steppe of western Siberia, on the river of the same name. From above, the river winds through the town in slow, tight meanders, leaving oxbow lakes and floodplain meadows where its earlier channels ran. The older streets follow a regular grid on higher ground, and newer districts spread out across the plain.
Ishim was founded in the seventeenth century as a fortified settlement and grew into a trading town known for its large annual Nikolskaya fair. It lies on the Trans-Siberian Railway between Tyumen and Omsk. The town is closely associated with Pyotr Yershov, author of the fairy tale The Little Humpbacked Horse, who spent part of his childhood here.
An Ishim map poster shows the steady grid of the old town against the loose curves of the river and its oxbows. The railway adds a firm straight line across the plain, and the scattered lakes give the edges of the print a soft, open character. It is a map shaped as much by water as by planning.
The Ishim River loops through and around the town. Its curved channels, oxbow lakes and floodplain give the map its most distinctive shapes.
The historic centre follows a regular grid of long streets and square blocks, a pattern typical of Siberian trading towns.
The Trans-Siberian Railway crosses the plain near the town. Its straight, confident line contrasts with the soft curves of the river.

Ishim is a map for families with roots in western Siberia, for railway travellers who remember the station, and for readers who know it through Yershov's tale. Its river gives the print an unusual, lively outline.
