Isnos lies in the Huila Department of southern Colombia, in the mountains where the Magdalena River begins its long journey north. From above, the town is a small grid of streets on high ground, surrounded by green hills, coffee farms and deep valleys cut by rivers and streams.
The area is known for its archaeology. Near the town are Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras, sites with carved stone statues and tombs that belong to the San Agustín Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape around is also known for the Salto de Bordones, one of the tallest waterfalls in Colombia.
