Istok, known in Albanian as Istog, lies in western Kosovo at the northern edge of the Dukagjin plain, below the slopes of the Mokna range. Its name means spring or source, and the Istog river rises close to the town in a strong karst spring. On a map the water appears right at the edge of the streets and then flows out across the plain.
The town has a small, walkable centre, with streets fanning out toward the surrounding villages and farmland spreading across the flat ground to the south. The spring area is known for its trout ponds and shaded paths. An Istok map poster sets the steep hills against the plain, so mountain and valley meet in a single frame.
Roads link Istok with Peja to the southwest and with central Kosovo to the east, drawing long lines across the countryside. Villages sit along these routes in small clusters. The result is a map of a town tied closely to its setting, where water, slopes and fields can all be read at a glance.

Mokna slopes
Hills rise directly to the north, so the streets stop abruptly against the mountainside, giving Istok a clear northern boundary on the map.
Dukagjin plain
To the south, flat farmland opens out in a regular pattern of fields and village roads, a calm counterpoint to the hills.
