Itatira is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in Brazil's semi-arid northeast. The town itself is small and compact: a short grid of streets around a central area, with roads leaving towards the rural districts. Around it, the map opens out into wide stretches of sertão, crossed by dirt tracks and dotted with small farms and communities.
Much of the landscape is shaped by a seasonal climate, with long dry periods and rains concentrated in part of the year. Small reservoirs, locally called açudes, and intermittent streams appear as irregular shapes across the countryside. The terrain is uneven, with hills and ridges rising from the surrounding plain in places.
