Juye lies in the southwest of Shandong, within Heze prefecture, on some of the flattest ground in China. From above there is almost no relief to interrupt the lines: the town grows as a grid of wide roads, and around it the land breaks into long, narrow fields, village clusters and drainage channels that run with the same patient regularity.
The name recalls the Great Ye Marsh, a vast body of water that once covered much of this area before centuries of silt from the Yellow River filled it in. Juye also appears in modern history through the Juye Incident of 1897, when the killing of two German missionaries was used by Germany as a pretext to seize Jiaozhou Bay.
