Kağızman lies in the south of Kars Province, in the valley of the Aras river. On a map, the town sits where the mountains open onto the valley floor. Streets fan out over the lower slopes, and the river and its irrigated fields run along the lowland nearby. Roads follow the valley toward Iğdır and climb north toward Kars.
The valley is noticeably lower and milder than the high Kars plateau, which lets orchards and farmland thrive around the town.
