Kalaban Koro lies just south of Bamako, on the far side of the Niger River from the capital's historic centre. Administratively it belongs to the Koulikoro Region, but on a map it reads as part of the wider urban area, a zone where the city keeps expanding into surrounding farmland and open savanna.
Its growth has been rapid, and the map shows it: fresh grids of residential plots, many laid out in regular rectangles, sit beside older village cores with less formal lanes. Main roads leading south from Bamako carry most of the traffic, and smaller streets branch off them in a pattern that fills in a little more with every year.
A Kalaban Koro map poster captures a place in the act of becoming a city. In black and white, the dense blocks near the capital thin into wider parcels and open ground, and the edge of the settlement appears as a gradient rather than a line. It is a quiet, graphic record of how quickly West African cities are changing.
The river that defines Bamako lies just to the north, and its broad channel makes a natural frame for the commune's streets on the southern side of the metropolitan area.
Newer neighbourhoods were laid out as regular rectangular lots, and from above they form crisp grids that contrast with the irregular lanes of older settlement cores.
Toward the south and west the built area thins into fields and open land, giving the map a soft boundary where the city meets the countryside.
