Kalmunai lies on the east coast of Sri Lanka, in Ampara District of the Eastern Province. From above, the town stretches in a long, narrow band between the straight sandy shore of the Indian Ocean and a lagoon inland. The main coastal road runs through its full length, and short streets branch off it towards the sea on one side and the water and paddy fields on the other.
Kalmunai is a commercial centre for the surrounding coast, with a mixed Tamil and Muslim population and a long fishing tradition. The town was among the places worst hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and much of its coastal area was rebuilt in the years that followed.
A Kalmunai map poster has an unusual, elongated shape: the ocean on one side, the lagoon on the other, and a dense ribbon of streets squeezed between them. Beyond the lagoon, rice fields spread out in a flat, open pattern. The map is simple in structure but very clearly tied to its coast.
The Indian Ocean shore runs in a long, almost unbroken line along the eastern edge of the map, lined with beaches used by fishing boats.
The main road runs north to south through the town, parallel to the sea, and most of the street network grows out from this one line.
West of the town, a lagoon and flat rice fields form a wide open zone, giving the map a quiet counterweight to the dense coastal strip.

For families from Kalmunai, including many who now live abroad, the town's narrow shape between sea and lagoon is part of home. A print of it can mark a family history, a return visit, or the rebuilding of a community after the tsunami.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates of your choosing, perhaps a family name or a meaningful date. Classic black & white keeps the coastline sharp, and Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand offer other ways to frame the sea.
