Trincomalee lies on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, and few cities have a more striking outline. The town sits on a narrow peninsula between the open sea and a vast natural harbour. The harbour is a deep, sheltered basin with many arms, bays and islands, and its shape dominates any map of the area.
The harbour has drawn traders and navies for centuries, and it has been fought over by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. Fort Frederick guards the headland, and at the tip of Swami Rock stands the Koneswaram temple, a major Hindu shrine high above the ocean.
A Trincomalee map poster is mostly water and coastline. The town's grid of streets fills the neck of the peninsula, the headland runs out to sea toward Swami Rock, and the harbour's winding shoreline wraps around everything to the west and south. The result is one of the most dramatic coastal compositions in the region.
The deep, many-armed harbour spreads out to the west of the town. Its complex outline of bays and inlets forms a large, sculptural shape on the map.
A rocky promontory reaches north-east into the ocean, with Fort Frederick at its base and the Koneswaram temple near its cliff edge.
The town's streets fill the narrow neck of land between the harbour and the open sea, with beaches curving along both sides.

This map is for people from the Eastern Province, sailors who know the harbour, and travellers who watched the sunrise from Swami Rock. The shape of the coastline alone makes a powerful print, even in a small size.
