Kalpatta, often written Kalpetta, is the headquarters of Wayanad district in northern Kerala. It lies on a plateau in the Western Ghats, surrounded by tea and coffee estates, spice gardens and forested hills. The air is noticeably cooler than on the coast below.
On a map, the town follows the terrain, not a plan. The main highway linking Kozhikode on the coast with Mysuru in Karnataka runs through the centre.
