Kamal lies on the western edge of Madura island in East Java, at the point where the island comes closest to Surabaya on the mainland. On a map the Madura Strait dominates: a band of water separating Kamal's shoreline from the dense city opposite, with the port facing directly across it. For generations the ferry crossing here was the main link between Madura and Java.
The town itself is compact, with streets running inland from the harbour and settlement thinning quickly into fields, fishponds and villages. Roads lead from the port toward Bangkalan and the rest of the island, forming a few clear arteries in an otherwise loose pattern of small lanes. The coastline is low and irregular, edged in places with aquaculture ponds.
Since the Suramadu Bridge opened a short distance to the east, much traffic has shifted to the bridge, but the ferry port still defines Kamal's place in the region. A Kamal map poster shows that relationship clearly, with the town on one side of the strait and the edge of Surabaya on the other, joined by the idea of a crossing.
A narrow stretch of water divides Kamal from Surabaya, forming a strong horizontal band on the poster with two very different shorelines on either side.
The port juts into the strait as a small, angular structure, the historic starting point for crossings between Madura and the Javanese mainland.
Low ground along the shore is divided into rectangular fishponds, adding a grid-like texture to the edge of the map where land meets water.

For many Madurese families, Kamal was the doorway to Java, the place where journeys to work, study or family began. A map of this crossing holds that meaning, and it suits anyone who has made the trip across the strait many times.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps a family name or a year, and choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The strait reads especially boldly in Classic black and white and Noir.
