Kampong Speu is the capital of the Cambodian province of the same name. It lies about fifty kilometres west of Phnom Penh on National Road 4, the main route to the coast at Sihanoukville. The road runs straight through the town and forms the dominant line on a map, with shops and streets gathered close to it.
The surrounding lowland is flat and farmed, a patchwork of rice paddies dotted with tall sugar palms. The province is known for its palm sugar, which holds a protected geographical indication. Further west the land rises toward the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains and Kirirom National Park, a backdrop of forested hills.
A Kampong Speu map poster shows a compact provincial centre set in open country. The main road and its cross streets form a clear frame, smaller lanes branch out toward the fields, and the land beyond is left mostly empty. The result is a simple, balanced composition that reflects everyday life in a Cambodian market town.
The main highway between Phnom Penh and the coast passes straight through the town. On the poster it is the strongest line, with the town arranged along it.
Paddies and sugar palm groves spread in every direction beyond the built-up area. They appear as open space, which gives the compact town centre room to stand out.
The busiest part of town holds the densest cluster of streets. It is a small, closely drawn grid that marks the commercial centre of the province.
