Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, a long and fairly flat landmass lying off the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. At its eastern end the Dudley Peninsula almost reaches the mainland, separated by the waters of Backstairs Passage, and the ferry from Cape Jervis lands at Penneshaw. From there a sparse network of roads runs west across farmland and bush for well over a hundred kilometres.
The main town, Kingscote, sits on the sheltered waters of Nepean Bay on the north-east coast. Further west the roads thin out and the land gives way to Flinders Chase National Park, where the Remarkable Rocks balance on a granite dome and Admirals Arch frames the sea at Cape du Couedic. The island was named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 after his crew landed and hunted kangaroos there.
Large parts of the island burned in the bushfires of 2019 and 2020, and the bush has been regrowing since. A Kangaroo Island map poster captures the island's scale and emptiness: long straight roads, wide gaps between settlements, a few lagoons and inlets along the coast, and a western end where the lines on the map almost stop.
The strait between the Dudley Peninsula and the mainland is the island's closest point to the rest of Australia, crossed by ferry between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw.
The national park at the western end leaves a wide area almost free of roads, its edges marked by Cape du Couedic, Admirals Arch and the Remarkable Rocks.
Kingscote and the island's densest streets sit along this sheltered bay on the north-east coast, a wide, calm inlet that holds the island's main harbour.

Ko e hā ʻa Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island stays with people who have driven its long roads at dusk, watched sea lions on the south coast or walked the rocks at Flinders Chase. A map of the whole island holds that sense of distance and open space in a single calm frame.
