Kannur lies on the northern Malabar coast of Kerala, and its shape is set by the sea. The shoreline runs as a long line of beaches, broken by small headlands and inlets, and the town's streets pack in densely behind it, with the cantonment area and the older quarters close to the water.
The coast has a long history of trade. St. Angelo Fort, built by the Portuguese in the early sixteenth century and later held by the Dutch and the British, still stands on a promontory overlooking the sea. Kannur was also the seat of the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal house in Kerala.
A Kannur map poster shows how the town meets the Arabian Sea, with Payyambalam beach, the fort on its point and the harbour area all readable in black and white. The district is also known for Theyyam, the ritual performance tradition, and for handloom weaving.
The Portuguese-built fort sits on a headland above the sea, its angular outline clearly visible where the coast bends near the town.
A long, straight stretch of sand runs along the town's edge, forming the clean western boundary of the map.
The cantonment area near the coast has a more open, ordered layout than the dense surrounding streets, a clear contrast on the page.

Kannur is a town that many people leave for the Gulf, Bengaluru or farther, and return to often. A map on the wall holds the coastline, the fort and the streets of home in one clean frame.
