Karabağlar is one of the central districts of İzmir, on the southern side of the metropolitan area. On a map it reads as a dense urban fabric that starts on the flatter ground near the older city and then climbs steadily into the hills. Streets that run straight on the lower ground begin to twist and step as the slope increases, and the built-up area eventually gives way to wooded upland.
The district was formed in 2008, when it was separated from Konak, and it is now one of İzmir's most populous areas. Its name means black vineyards, a reminder that these slopes were once planted with vines before the city grew over them. Much of its housing went up quickly during the second half of the twentieth century as people arrived from across Anatolia.
A Karabağlar map poster is about texture and terrain. The tight neighbourhood blocks form a pattern almost like a woven surface, and the way the pattern bends with the contours shows the hills without any shading. Because the frame can be set wider, the edge of the district and the greener land beyond it can also be included.
Residential streets climb the southern slopes in short, winding segments. On the map they create a fine, irregular mesh that follows the landform.
Closer to central İzmir the land levels out, and the streets straighten into longer lines and larger blocks linked to the rest of the city.
At its southern limit the dense fabric stops against wooded hills, giving the district a clear boundary between city and open land.

Ko e hā ʻa Karabağlar
For people who grew up on these slopes, the dense streets say more about home than any skyline. The map is a way of holding onto a specific corner of İzmir rather than the city as a whole.
Personalise the title with Karabağlar or your own neighbourhood, add a date to the subtitle, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper keeps the hillside pattern soft and readable.
