Kawkareik is in Kayin State in southeastern Myanmar. It lies on low ground west of the Dawna Range, the forested hills along the Thai border. From above, the town is a small grid of streets surrounded by rice fields and plantations. The land becomes more rugged and wooded toward the east.
The town sits on the main road that runs from the border crossing at Myawaddy, opposite Mae Sot in Thailand, toward Mawlamyine and the rest of the country. This makes it an important stop on one of Myanmar's key overland trade routes.
A Kawkareik map poster shows the compact town beside the long road that runs through it. Fields and streams fill the lowland around it, and the terrain grows more complex toward the hills. It is a map of passage and landscape, with the road as the unifying thread.
The road from Myawaddy passes through the town on its way west. It forms the strongest line on the map and reflects Kawkareik's role on the trade route.
Toward the east, the land rises into forested hills. Winding tracks and dense terrain contrast with the flat lowland around the town.
Rice paddies and plantations surround the settlement, forming a soft pattern of small plots and streams across the lower part of the map.
